George Humphreys will remain in prison for life with no chance of parole, followed by a further 10 years, under the sentence a McIntosh County judge imposed Thursday for Tony Ferguson’s killing.
The sentence followed a unanimous verdict Wednesday, Oct. 28. Jurors found Humphreys guilty on all five counts at about 6:30 p.m., after roughly an hour of deliberations.
The case included malice murder, felony murder and multiple gun charges. The three-day trial featured testimony from several witnesses and evidence presented to the jury.
The judge said Humphreys was sentenced as a recidivist because of multiple previous felony convictions. The prosecutor cited convictions from 2011, twice, and from 2013, 2016 and 2019, and asked for the maximum sentence.
In support of that request, the prosecutor said Humphreys had twice been convicted of threatening to kill different people and continued possessing firearms despite being barred from having a gun.
At least 25 members of Ferguson’s family attended Thursday’s sentencing, and his oldest daughter spoke. Some of Humphreys’ children, his mother and two other women were also in court; his mother spoke before the sentence was imposed.
