TOWNSEND, Ga. — A McIntosh County investigation into a 2-month-old infant’s death has led to murder and child-cruelty charges against two people, the sheriff’s office announced Thursday.

Ty’ena Massey and Jodarius Demery were arrested Oct. 29. Each faces one count of second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree cruelty to children, according to the McIntosh County Sheriff’s Office.

Both were taken to the McIntosh County Jail and were being held without bond at the time of the announcement.

The case began three days earlier, on Monday, Oct. 26, when authorities learned that the infant had died at Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick.

McIntosh County detectives responded to the death and subsequently asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to assist. The GBI took the lead in the death investigation, with the sheriff’s office continuing to work alongside the state agency.

On Thursday, GBI agents and McIntosh County deputies and investigators served arrest warrants on Massey and Demery at 1138 County Road SE in Townsend.

The sheriff’s office said investigators are withholding additional details to protect the ongoing investigation. The announcement did not identify the infant, describe the circumstances of the death or specify either suspect’s relationship to the child.

The release, issued by Sheriff Thornell “T.K.” King, described the investigation as active. No further details were released Thursday.

The charges are allegations. Massey and Demery are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
