Georgia gubernatorial candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms brought her closing campaign message to Savannah on Friday, Oct. 30, urging people at Kim’s Cafe to help get another voter to the polls before Nov. 3.

The gathering drew enough people that some had to stand. Savannah Mayor Van Johnson attended and recalled Bottoms calling to check on Savannah residents during the COVID-19 pandemic. He said her public service reached beyond Atlanta.

Johnson also said President Trump’s appeals at campaign events for voters to imagine him on the ballot had been on his mind when he voted. “Let our votes do the talking,” Johnson told the crowd.

A Poll Max reading Friday afternoon put Bottoms ahead of Republican Rick Jackson by half a percentage point. Bottoms said she would not feel comfortable until the final votes were counted. She described the campaign’s closing stretch as “the sprint part of this marathon” and said she would not take voters for granted.

Bottoms said she had campaigned in Brunswick earlier Friday and planned to crisscross Georgia in the days before Election Day. She also called for Democrats to win support across the ballot, citing Dr. Alicia Johnson’s representation on the Public Service Commission, Peter Hubbard’s opportunity to fill another commission seat and the party’s goals of flipping the state House and gaining seats in the Senate.

If elected, Bottoms said her priorities would include restoring funding cuts by the Trump administration, suspending the grocery tax and expanding Medicaid.
