Savannah’s preliminary plan to extend the Tide to Town trail along Montgomery Cross Road focuses on a corridor with a crash rate 87% above the state average and an injury rate 79% higher.
From 2021 to 2025, Montgomery Cross Road had four pedestrian-related crashes, including one fatality. Fourteen bicycle crashes during that period caused 11 injuries.
More than 100 residents attended a public engagement meeting on the project Oct. 20. The City of Savannah presented early designs for a multi-use trail on one side of the road and a sidewalk on the other.
The preliminary design would fit the trail within existing right of way and reduce the road’s current four lanes. Options presented for protective barriers included posts, a constructed median, a concrete barrier and planters.
Residents can share feedback through Nov. 4 using an online survey paired with the city’s presentation from the meeting. The Montgomery Cross Road segment is in the planning phase; the intended route would connect Lake Mayer to Middleground Road, where another segment is being designed.
