Volunteers can help prepare recycled oyster shells for new coastal reefs at a free Savannah event Friday, Oct. 23, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The shell-bagging activity, with staff from the Shellfish Research Lab, will take place at 30 Ocean Science Circle, Savannah, GA 31411.
The shells will be used to create oyster reefs. In estuaries, they give new oysters a place to settle and grow. Reefs also provide habitat for fish and other organisms, help stabilize shorelines and filter pollutants from the water.
The work involves shoveling, repeated bending and other physical activity. Volunteers must be at least 18, and registration is required. Admission is free. The event listing provides tbliss@uga.edu as a contact.
