WAYNE COUNTY — Residents should prepare for potentially severe thunderstorms Sunday afternoon and evening, with damaging winds, hail and heavy rainfall possible across the county.
Storms are expected to begin developing around midafternoon Sunday, September 6, with the primary threat lasting from approximately 2 p.m. until midnight. It will not storm continuously throughout that period, but any thunderstorm that develops could quickly become strong or severe.
The greatest concern will be damaging wind gusts reaching 60 mph. Winds of that strength can knock down trees, damage roofs and cause power outages. Hail and frequent lightning are also possible, while repeated downpours could produce localized flooding.
The “National Weather Service in Jacksonville” (https://www.weather.gov/jax/) says isolated to scattered severe storms are possible across Southeast Georgia Sunday afternoon and evening. Forecasters are also warning that localized flooding could remain a concern through Monday.
Residents should secure outdoor furniture, trampolines and other loose objects before storms arrive. Keep phones charged and make sure emergency alerts are enabled.
If a severe thunderstorm warning is issued, move inside a sturdy building and remain away from windows. Drivers should never attempt to cross a flooded roadway.
