A Georgia family that lost two young brothers and their mother in a 2023 crash is working to help other children travel safely.

Bailey Boys Car Seats held its “An August to Remember” child-passenger safety event Saturday, August 29, on Commercial Drive in Savannah.

Families could have their child seats inspected by certified technicians, receive help choosing the correct seat and learn how to secure each seat properly. Car seats were also available for families who needed one.

The nonprofit was founded by the Bailey family in May 2024 in memory of 5-year-old Knowledge Bailey and his 4-year-old brother, Kingston Bailey.

The boys and their mother, Shatasha Fields, died following an August 2023 crash in Statesboro.

Their grandmother, Valerie Bailey-Hearns, said the family initially planned to distribute 10 car seats in the boys’ memory.

While organizing that giveaway, relatives learned that providing a seat was only part of keeping a child safe.

Family members became certified child-passenger safety technicians so they could also teach caregivers how to select, position and install seats correctly.

Bailey Boys Car Seats now provides new car seats, safety inspections, installation assistance and educational resources to families in need.

Georgia law requires children younger than 8 to be properly restrained in an appropriate car seat or booster seat.

Children younger than 8 who are also under 57 inches tall generally must ride in the back seat.

Parents and caregivers do not have to wait for a special event to receive installation help.

Safe Kids Savannah offers appointments with certified technicians at 912-665-8385, and the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety maintains a statewide directory of free inspection stations.
