Tybee Island’s Walter Parker Pier and Pavilion is slated to close to the public for about three hours on a filming day during the first week of November. The temporary closure is part of an Amazon limited-series production planned at three locations on the island.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources Coastal Resources Division issued a Letter of Permission for filming scenes for The Challenger, a drama about astronaut Sally Ride and events leading up to the 1986 Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. At the pier, the crew plans to film a walking-and-talking scene.
At the beach between 6th and 7th streets, filming plans call for a performer to launch a parasail from shore into open water. Marine safety vessels will support the stunt, with the U.S. Coast Guard involved in coordination.
A separate overnight shoot is planned for the area of 19th Street and Chatham Avenue, running from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. The planned scenes include fireworks on the beachfront and an ocean swim; the production will also reach the beach by a dune path from a private residence. Security and production assistants are expected to pause pedestrians intermittently at public dune crossings while cameras are rolling.
State requirements prohibit crews from disturbing dune plants. Heavy equipment must use protective mats and designated routes, and vehicles must be refueled on paved surfaces away from the sand. After filming, crews must hand-rake affected beach areas back to their natural condition.
Kristen Stewart is set to play Ride in the limited series.
