Effingham County deputies plan to visit all 114 registered sex offenders who live in the county at least once by the end of the week, checking their addresses and compliance with registry requirements, the Sheriff’s Office says.

The door-to-door checks are part of Operation Watchful Eye, an annual, weeklong statewide effort continuing through Nov. 2. Effingham County is taking part for the 11th year, Deputy Kathy Dillard said, describing the initiative as proactive monitoring.

The Sheriff’s Office says the main goal is to confirm registry information is accurate and current, rather than to make arrests. During last year’s operation, deputies conducted 146 compliance checks and made two arrests.

Residents can use a map in the Sheriff’s Office’s free mobile app to search for registered offenders in their neighborhoods.
