Effingham County has announced a $2 million OpenAI grant to help begin the trail system at Atlas Park.
The work is part of the park’s first-phase improvements, which are also supported by the county’s SPLOST 2022 program, officials said.
The grant was provided through OpenAI’s $80 million community investment fund. County officials met with OpenAI Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar at the park on Thursday, Oct. 22, to recognize the funding and partnership.
Atlas Park is being developed on a former sand-mining site near Highway 80 and Sand Hill Road.
County officials say trails will connect amenities and give visitors places to walk, bike and exercise while experiencing the property’s natural surroundings.
The park’s long-term master plan also lists pickleball, basketball and volleyball courts, an outdoor arena, event venues, a swimming beach, camping, fishing and boating, along with access to the Ogeechee River.
County Manager Tim Callanan said the project is an investment in residents’ quality of life and described Atlas Park as one of the county’s major recreation efforts.
