A landscaping assignment at the City of Hazlehurst Cemetery ended with flowers and other memorial items being mistakenly removed from gravesites on Friday, August 28, 2026.

Four inmates were sent to the cemetery to cut the grass. The work detail was reportedly instructed to collect heavily faded or damaged flowers for disposal.

However, the inmates mistakenly removed all items from the gravesites, including flowers, coins, cards and other personal tributes, and threw them away.

City officials said they were unaware of what had happened until a resident brought the matter to their attention. The City of Hazlehurst has since issued a sincere apology for the confusion.
