A man remains hospitalized in critical condition after an off-duty Hinesville police officer shot him early Saturday outside Frozen Paradise Bar and Grill.

The shooting occurred at approximately 1:50 a.m. on August 29 at the business, located at 818 E.G. Miles Parkway in Hinesville.

According to preliminary information released by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, two Hinesville Police Department officers were working off duty at the establishment when a fight involving several people began inside the bar and moved outside.

The GBI said a customer alerted one of the officers about the fight. As the officer approached the building, 31-year-old Cashane Cadeem Calder of Hinesville allegedly fired a handgun multiple times into the crowd.

One of the officers returned fire, striking Calder several times. Calder was transported to a hospital, where he was listed in stable but critical condition. No officers were injured.

The Hinesville Police Department requested that the GBI conduct an independent investigation into the shooting.

Anyone with information may contact the Hinesville Police Department at 912-368-8211 or the GBI’s Statesboro Regional Investigative Office at 912-871-1121. Anonymous tips can be submitted at 1-800-597-TIPS (8477), through the GBI’s online tip line or through the See Something, Send Something mobile app.

Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be submitted to the Atlantic Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
