Jordan Firstman received the Rising Star Director Award at the SCAD Film Festival’s second night in Savannah on Sunday, Oct. 25. Jessica Lange was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award, while the cast of “The Mosquito Bowl” received the Ensemble Award.
Trustees Theater on Broughton Street hosted the program. A SCAD spokesperson said people began gathering at 2 p.m., more than three hours before the red carpet was scheduled to begin.
Firstman is the writer, director and star of “Club Kid,” an upcoming film about a club promoter who unexpectedly has to raise a 10-year-old son he never knew he had. Firstman said the story draws on the uncertainty he sees among friends his age who feel expected to be adults without knowing how. He described the film as allowing people to be unsure and to change.
Writer-director Joel Crawford and actor Liza Soberano, who plays Raissa, also visited Savannah to discuss DreamWorks’ animated film “Forgotten Island.” It follows two friends stranded on a mysterious island as they try to escape before they lose their memories of each other. Soberano said the story puts friendship at its center amid what she sees as a focus on individualism and appearances. Crawford said he sees more loneliness in the world and wanted the film to show people’s need for connection and shared experiences.
The festival was scheduled to continue for six more days after Sunday’s program. Actor Paul Bettany, known for playing Vision in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was scheduled to appear on the red carpet Monday, among other guests.
