Bulloch County’s State Court solicitor general’s office has worked on more than 7,000 cases so far in 2026, and Judith Oglesby says it plans to seek another attorney in the coming months. Oglesby is settling into the permanent role after serving as interim solicitor general since August.
Her interim appointment followed Catherine Sumner’s move to the vacant district attorney position. Oglesby had served as Bulloch County’s chief assistant solicitor general since 2022.
The solicitor general’s office prosecutes misdemeanor criminal and traffic offenses. Oglesby said the criminal cases include offenses punishable by up to 12 months, while traffic matters include payable speeding tickets and failure to yield.
Oglesby described staffing changes during the transition, saying the office had been reduced to two attorneys and, for a time, one administrative staff member. She said the office is focused on keeping cases moving while continuing a file-free system and using a new evidence system.
She said prosecutors assess cases individually, taking the facts and appropriate outcome into account. Some offenses, including DUI, carry mandatory minimums set by statute, she noted.
Oglesby is from Statesboro and said she has been in the area since about 1986. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Georgia Southern University and her law degree in Wilmington, Delaware.
After returning, she worked as a staff attorney with the Superior Court and ran its alternative speed resolution program for about 10 years. She later served as an assistant district attorney in the Ogeechee Judicial Circuit before joining Sumner’s office.
