Statesboro’s planned Kroger Marketplace could bring 200 to 300 jobs, according to Mayor Jonathan McCollar, who estimated the project’s cost at $45 million.

Kroger leaders and local elected officials held a groundbreaking Wednesday, Oct. 21, for the development off Veterans Memorial Parkway.

The store is expected to open in fall 2027. Kroger said in a news release that it will anchor a 21-acre shopping center.

The plans include four outparcels and another 10,850 square feet of retail space.

The Marketplace itself will cover about 99,000 square feet, said Tammie Young-Ennaemba, Kroger’s Atlanta Division head of communications and public affairs.

Planned departments include a deli, bakery, meat and produce. The store also is slated to have a drive-thru pharmacy and a fuel center.

The groundbreaking followed an earlier announcement of the Marketplace.

Young-Ennaemba also described Kroger’s “Zero Hunger, Zero Waste” initiative, saying the company works with local food banks to recover food and seeks to keep plastic and cardboard out of landfills.
