Michael Gibson gave the yaupon holly garden at Savannah’s Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum its first official trim Friday, bringing its sea-inspired design to life for museum guests.

During demonstrations, Gibson shaped the shrubs and talked about topiary techniques, history and storytelling. He said the garden’s forms are meant to evoke waves and ripples and the 1819 voyage of the Savannah from its harbor to London.

The event also gave visitors a preview of Gibson’s plans for a full exhibition at the museum in 2027.
