Nearly four years after Marvin Swan was shot to death at a Savannah apartment complex, Julian Bryant has been indicted in the case. Bryant, 42, faces murder, assault and firearm charges connected to the Dec. 11, 2022, shooting at the Waters at Gateway Apartments.

The indictment alleges Bryant used a 9mm handgun to shoot Swan. It charges him with malice murder and two counts of felony murder. Other charges are aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon during the commission of a crime.

Savannah police went to the complex near Interstate 95 and Georgia 204 after a call about a disorderly person around 10:30 p.m. that night. Officers found Swan, 40, with gunshot wounds outside apartment building 200. He later died, and police opened a homicide investigation.

Swan’s longtime girlfriend said she was inside their apartment when she heard sounds she thought were fireworks. She said a bystander eventually answered Swan’s phone when she called him and told her where he was. She found him near the leasing office, according to her account.

Bryant was not arrested until nearly four years after Swan’s death. The indictment links the two charges involving possession by a convicted felon to Bryant’s 2006 armed robbery conviction in Chatham County. He served 11 years in prison for that conviction.

Bryant’s arraignment is still ahead. A bond hearing is scheduled for Dec. 1; he was previously denied bond. The indictment sets out allegations, not a finding of guilt.
