SAVANNAH, Ga. — U.S. Rep. Buddy Carter said Sunday he supports bipartisan legislation that would require human review when artificial intelligence is used in healthcare-coverage decisions.
The proposed Doctors Not AI Act would allow AI to serve as a support tool, but it would require medical professionals to independently review a patient’s record and make the final decision. The legislation would also require disclosure when AI is used in the decision-making process.
Carter said AI cannot replace a doctor’s judgment, arguing that human oversight and transparency are especially important when decisions affect mental-health care, cancer treatment, hospital visits and other services.
The proposal is still being advanced by its supporters. No House vote date was included in the announcement.
