ATLANTA, Ga. — Atlanta was eliminated Thursday from the competition to host the 2028 Democratic National Convention as party officials narrowed the field to Boston, Denver and Philadelphia.

The Democratic National Committee did not publicly explain why Atlanta or Chicago was removed from consideration. A final host city is expected to be selected later this year. The convention is scheduled for Aug. 7-10, 2028.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens strongly criticized the decision, arguing that party leaders are ignoring Atlanta’s political importance and the role Southern and Black voters play in Democratic victories.
Dickens accused the DNC of abandoning Atlanta, the South and Black voters while retreating to areas where the party is already more comfortable.

The mayor also questioned how the decision could have been based on Atlanta’s ability to handle major events, pointing to the city’s experience hosting large national and international gatherings.

Atlanta last hosted the Democratic National Convention in 1988.
