A federal inquiry is seeking answers about reports that some military families arrived at Fort Stewart and found their assigned on-post homes were not ready.

U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff sent a letter to Balfour Beatty Communities on August 12 requesting detailed information about how the private housing contractor prepares homes between residents.

According to Ossoff, constituents have reported that delayed turnovers forced incoming families to locate temporary accommodations during permanent-change-of-station moves.
The senator said those delays can create financial strain for military families while affecting morale and military readiness.

Balfour Beatty manages Fort Stewart’s privatized family housing. Department of Defense information lists 3,268 housing units across 10 on-post neighborhoods.

Ossoff asked the company to provide:
Its average time for preparing a Fort Stewart home for another family.
A comparison between Fort Stewart’s turnaround time and other military installations.

Turnover data covering the busy relocation period from May through August 2026.

The number of families who arrived between January 2025 and August 2026 without their assigned homes being ready.

The length of each family’s wait and how often the company communicated with them.

An explanation of any steps taken to correct summer delays.
Balfour Beatty was asked to respond by August 26.

The inquiry does not establish how many families experienced delays. That number is among the records Ossoff is requesting from the company.

No public response from Balfour Beatty addressing the inquiry was located as of Sunday morning.

Fort Stewart families with unresolved housing problems can first contact the installation’s housing management or maintenance offices. The published escalation process also allows residents to contact Balfour Beatty’s corporate care line and the Army’s Resident Communities Initiative office if a problem remains unresolved.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
