Drivers can expect increased law-enforcement activity on Liberty County roads beginning today as deputies join a national campaign targeting impaired driving.
The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office says it will participate in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” mobilization from Wednesday, August 19, through Labor Day, September 7.
Deputies will increase traffic enforcement as part of the campaign, which focuses on removing drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs from the road.
The sheriff’s office has not announced the locations of additional patrols or whether sobriety checkpoints are planned.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration coordinates the campaign during the weeks surrounding Labor Day, when increased holiday travel and gatherings involving alcohol can create additional dangers.
Federal traffic-safety data shows 505 people died in crashes nationwide during the 2024 Labor Day weekend. Approximately one-third of those deaths involved an alcohol-impaired driver.
NHTSA advises anyone planning to drink to arrange transportation before leaving home. Options include choosing a designated sober driver, using a ride service or staying overnight.
Passengers should not allow an impaired person to drive. Anyone who sees a vehicle being operated dangerously should avoid approaching it and call 911 with the vehicle’s description, location and direction of travel.
The campaign ends September 7, but Georgia’s impaired-driving laws remain enforceable every day of the year.
