A search for former Massie Elementary attendees connected former teacher Alice Gerber and former student Linda Carroll at a reunion at Savannah’s Massie Heritage Center.

Former students and teachers gathered at the center and shared their stories with the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System. Friends of Massie president Gale Stevens said the group has been trying to find people who attended the school.

Massie opened in 1856 as Savannah’s first public school and operated for 118 years. It now operates as a museum at Abercorn and East Gordon streets.

Stevens said another event is planned, but no date or additional details were provided.
