Democrat Nathaniel Hicks says McIntosh County’s high-wealth status keeps its school system from receiving some state funding, making education a leading issue in his campaign for Georgia House District 167.

Hicks is running against current Republican Rep. Buddy DeLoach.

Hicks, 58, has worked as a paramedic and firefighter and is a pastor. He said his experience and age give him both perspective on voters’ concerns and the energy to address them.

Hicks argues that many properties in McIntosh County bring in no revenue for the county, even as the county is considered high-wealth.

He says that classification prevents the school system from qualifying for some state assistance. Hicks did not identify specific funding programs or propose a particular change.

He also wants to find a way to offset problems facing the area’s shrimping industry.

Hicks said shrimpers are having a hard time and described the industry as dwindling. He warned that it could eventually be unable to compete; he did not say that had already happened.

Hicks said he is ready to meet with voters across the district’s counties and discuss the issues they face.
