The Long County School Board is seeking zoning changes involving more than 224 acres as it considers sites for new school development.
According to a Long County public notice, one request involves approximately 80 acres on Arnold Road. The board is asking that part of the property be changed from Agricultural Forestry zoning to C-2 zoning for a new school.
A second request covers approximately 144 acres across three parcels on Barrett Cemetery Road. That property would also change from Agricultural Forestry to C-2 Multi-Purpose zoning for school development.
The county notice does not say whether the properties represent alternative locations or plans for two separate schools. It also does not identify proposed grade levels, construction costs, building designs or an expected construction schedule.
The requests come as Long County continues experiencing rapid population growth. U.S. Census Bureau estimates place the county’s July 2025 population at 21,557—an increase of 33.5 percent from its April 2020 population estimate base.
Both zoning requests are scheduled for consideration Monday, August 17, at the Long County Commissioners Office, 468 South McDonald Street in Ludowici. The public notice encourages interested residents to attend and be heard, but it does not list a meeting time.
The zoning hearing is expected to provide the public with its first formal opportunity to learn more about the proposed sites and how the school system may respond to the county’s continued growth.
