When we think about the daily dangers of summer in Southeast Georgia, most of us worry about the extreme heat or sudden thunderstorms.

But local health officials are officially sounding the alarm about a completely different, invisible threat that has just been confirmed in our area.

If you or your children spend any time outdoors in the yard, especially in the early mornings or evenings, you need to read this urgent public health update right now.

The Georgia Department of Public Health has just confirmed the first human case of a potentially fatal illness right next door in the Coastal Health District.

Authorities announced that an adult resident in neighboring Chatham County has officially contracted West Nile Virus.
This marks the very first local case in our coastal district for 2026, and only the second confirmed human case in the entire state of Georgia so far this year.

West Nile Virus is a serious illness transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito, making anyone who steps outside a potential target during these heavy summer mosquito months.

While many who contract the virus won’t show symptoms, those who do can experience severe fevers, debilitating headaches, joint pain, and vomiting.
In severe cases, the virus can aggressively attack the central nervous system, which can tragically be fatal.

Because there is absolutely no vaccine and no direct treatment for West Nile Virus, the Coastal Health District is begging residents to protect themselves immediately.

Officials are urging everyone across Liberty, Long, and all surrounding coastal counties to eliminate any standing water around their yards and to cover exposed skin with strong DEET repellent when going outside.

Are the mosquitoes heavily swarming in your neighborhood this week, and what are you doing to protect your family from this serious threat?
