After 11 years with Columbus Fire, advanced firefighter John Hammock joined Savannah Fire Department’s Station 5 about two months before Oct. 28.

Hammock moved to the Coastal Empire and is now getting to know a new crew and learning the station’s operating practices. He said his calls can include structure fires and medical calls, so the work changes from day to day.

He said he found the brotherhood he had hoped to find at Savannah Fire. Hammock also hopes to pass that sense of support on to the next generation of firefighters.

For incoming rookies, he recommends keeping their heads up, moving forward and doing the next right thing. Oct. 28 is National First Responders Day, which honors people working in public safety.
