Memorial Health broke ground in Pooler on Wednesday, Oct. 21, for an $18 million stand-alone emergency department intended to bring emergency care closer to Pooler and western Chatham County residents. The facility is expected to open in fall 2027.

The ER is being built near Costco, in front of Memorial’s new Galen College of Nursing campus. It is planned to provide full emergency services and ambulance access, rather than operate as an urgent care clinic. Patients who need more specialized treatment could still be taken to Memorial’s main hospital in Savannah.

Brad Talbert, CEO of Memorial Health University Medical Center, said Memorial Health treated more than 16,000 residents from Pooler and western Chatham County in the last year. Once the Pooler facility opens, he said, residents in that part of the county will no longer have to travel to Savannah to receive emergency care.

Pooler Mayor Karen Williams said having lifesaving care closer to home would give families on that side of the county peace of mind.
