Long County has no data center project currently proposed, but its Planning and Zoning Commission is scheduled to hold a public hearing and vote Nov. 16 on a temporary moratorium on future development.
At a Monday night discussion, commission members considered whether to recommend the pause to county commissioners, who would make the final decision. If the proposal advances, it still must go to the commissioners for approval.
Lisa Ruise, with Long County Planning and Zoning, said the county has not yet addressed the issue and voiced concern about how residents might respond to a proposed facility. Not every commission member was ready to support a moratorium: one said the county should first look into whether data center development could provide additional revenue.
Resident Ramsey Sleevar questioned whether Long County has the infrastructure, power, water and land to accommodate a large facility. He said he did not think the possibility should be ruled out, but residents should have more information.
The discussion comes as neighboring Liberty County has paused new data center applications in unincorporated areas for 120 days. Long County’s Nov. 16 hearing and vote will determine whether its proposal moves on to county commissioners.
