A caller claiming to represent the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and asking someone to withdraw or transfer money is running a scam, the Savannah Police Department warns. Scammers can spoof caller ID so an official name or government phone number, including one associated with the FDIC or Federal Trade Commission, appears on the screen.

Police say government agencies will not call and instruct people to move money to protect it. Anyone who receives such a request should hang up and check their account using their bank’s official channels. Do not rely on a number provided during the call.

To report the incident, call the Chatham County non-emergency line at 912-652-6500.
