Loletta Donaldson-Elliott won nearly 65% of the vote for Statesboro City Council’s District 2 seat, beating Maleek Jones and Kathleen Keehner and avoiding a runoff.
Statesboro officials say Donaldson-Elliott is scheduled to take the oath at the council’s Nov. 17 meeting, set for 5:30 p.m. She will fill the seat vacated by Paulette Chavers, who resigned in May.
In an interview Wednesday, Donaldson-Elliott said she watched the results with family and friends. She described the outcome as uncertain at first, saying, “I didn’t know what to expect,” before feeling more at ease as votes were reported.
Donaldson-Elliott said she was born and raised in District 2, went to school and graduated there, and has family business roots in the area spanning four generations. She said she wants to serve the community.
As she prepares to join the council, Donaldson-Elliott said she plans to hear from district residents and learn from her future council colleagues. She also intends to hold town hall meetings for people who live in District 2.
