A $750,000 National Park Service grant received by the Willow Hill Heritage and Renaissance Center is intended to support preservation and restoration of the historic Willow Hill School in Portal.
Formerly enslaved African Americans and their descendants founded the school in 1874. It integrated in 1971 and closed in 1999.
The center operates from a historic school building dating to 1954 in Bulloch County. Its work includes preserving local education, culture and community history.
