Students in Joyce Stevens’ classes at Woodville-Tompkins High School in Savannah learn about money and prepare for work.

Along with building knowledge of banking, investments and insurance, they develop resumes and cover letters and practice interviewing.

Stevens teaches business and financial literacy. She said financial skills can help students navigate a workplace shaped by fast-moving technology and artificial intelligence, and may save them future “headaches” and “heartaches.”

Her hopes for students are personal as well as practical. Stevens recalled that teachers in first and third grade changed her life.

She wants her own students to remember her as someone who cared about them and wanted the best for them.

Stevens calls her students Woodville scholars and described them as brilliant. She said she believes they will do well.
