At a Savannah event hosted by the ILA Group, health care professionals urged screening before symptoms appear. The employer’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month program also provided attendees with community resources.
The event highlighted figures stating that one in eight women and 10% of men are diagnosed with breast cancer.
Dr. Carolyn Eiland, chief clinical officer at Curtis V. Cooper Primary Healthcare, said screening mammograms can find lumps or other changes before someone feels them. She emphasized yearly screening and urged people not to wait until something feels wrong before seeing a doctor.
Medical experts at the event also described mammograms as lifesaving and encouraged people to schedule and attend their appointments.
