When you head out for a drink on a weekend night in Liberty County, you expect good music and a chance to unwind.
You certainly do not expect the night to end with a chaotic shootout right in the parking lot.
But for patrons at one well-known Hinesville spot, that nightmare just became a reality.
If you live anywhere near EG Miles Parkway, you probably saw the massive crime scene early Saturday morning.
Here is exactly what we know about the shocking officer-involved shooting that just rocked our community.
Right around 1:50 a.m. on August 29, a physical altercation suddenly broke out inside the Frozen Paradise Bar and Grill.
The fight quickly spilled out of the building, where two off-duty Hinesville Police Department officers were working security.
As one of the officers rushed over to break up the escalating brawl, the situation took a sudden, potentially deadly turn.
Authorities say a man in the crowd abruptly pulled out a handgun and began firing multiple times directly into the group of people.
Faced with an active shooter, the off-duty Hinesville officer immediately drew his own weapon and returned fire.
The officer shot the suspect multiple times, neutralizing the threat before innocent bystanders could be killed in the crossfire.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has officially identified the suspected shooter as 31-year-old Cashane Cadeem Calder of Hinesville.
Calder was rushed to a local hospital, where he currently remains in stable but critical condition.
Thankfully, officials confirmed that no police officers were injured during the terrifying exchange.
Because a local officer pulled the trigger, the GBI has officially taken over the active investigation.
Do you think off-duty officers working security at local bars is a necessary step to keep our weekends safe?
