Residents should not follow instructions in unexpected calls claiming a Walmart purchase was flagged, the Glynn County Sheriff’s Office warns. The office says automated callers are using AI-generated voices to impersonate Walmart’s fraud prevention team and report a costly unauthorized order.
Callers may tell recipients to press 1 or dial a number to dispute the purchase. The sheriff’s office says either route can connect people with a scammer seeking personal details, bank information or credit-card data.
Instead, hang up without pressing a key or calling a number provided during the call. Check orders or charges independently through Walmart’s official app or its Account & Security Help page, the advisory says.
The warning advises people not to share sensitive information or send gift cards, wire transfers or prepaid cards. It says Walmart will not request a full Social Security number, account PIN or gift cards by phone. The advisory also says the FCC has tracked more than 8 million such calls.
The alert does not describe a specific victim or incident in Glynn County.
