A 19-year-old woman was shot in the arm while walking home on West Pine Street early Sunday morning, October 18, according to Major Joshua Heath, chief of detectives for the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office.
Heath said three men began verbally harassing the woman, who lived on the street. She ignored them and continued walking before multiple rounds were fired in her direction. Investigators have not determined whether more than one man fired at her.
The woman’s father heard the commotion, came outside the residence and began firing at the men as they fled, Heath said. It is unknown whether any of the assailants were injured.
The woman was transported to Liberty Regional Medical Center in Hinesville, where she is being treated for a gunshot wound to her arm.
Liberty County 911 began receiving calls shortly after 4:30 a.m. A resident on West Pine Street, off Live Oak Drive, reported hearing approximately 10 gunshots. Additional callers reported gunfire and that someone had been shot. Approximately 20 calls came in related to the incident.
Callers also reported seeing two men running across Hollywood Drive and later hiding behind a trailer at Hollywood Mobile Home Park. Those sightings have not been confirmed as involving the men responsible for the shooting.
Deputies requested assistance from Hinesville police, and a Hinesville officer was the first law enforcement unit to arrive. Emergency medical personnel treated the woman while officers searched the surrounding area. The men described by callers could not be located.
The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate.
